Western Australian-based, engineering-led specialist in construction and maintenance services, ESI Alphatec, recently performed maintenance services for its Sydney marine client, including main engine crankshaft alignment and chocking on one of its vessels.
Project background
Our Sydney-based marine client engaged ESI Alphatec to perform alignment and chocking services on the main engine crankshaft of one of its vessels.
Challenge
The project included a range of challenges, including:
- Working in a confined space
- The client having to ballast and trim the vessel to provide a level engine foundation bedplate and thermal offset
- Performing laser alignment to obtain cold alignment between the engine and gearbox
- Checking and adjusting its central jacking bolt to ensure its middle crankshaft web deflection was as per the engine manufacturers specification
Outcome
Our team cleared the chock area, confirmed the alignment and completed the formwork for the vessel services, including installing Chockfast Orange.
Working to the brief, efficiently and effectively, our work involved:
- Cleaning the foundation, engine flange and jacking bolts
- Applying high-temperature grease and release agent to the foundation, engine flange and jacking bolts
- Installing internal foam dams in accordance with the chocking plan
- Applying caulking putty (retaining compound) to all the steel forms and gaps or areas where the Chockfast Orange could potentially leak
- Mixing and installing Chockfast Orange to each chock area and allowing it to cure
- Completing QA/QC on the chock installation, including a hardness test after it cured
- Testing the engine-to-gearbox cold alignment condition.
