Project background

CITIC Pacific Mining (CPM) engaged ESI Tech Group to conduct detailed hazardous area inspections and remedial works on its aerodrome refuelling facility at Cape Preston, Western Australia.

The scope of work included conducting detailed hazardous area inspections of all assets, remediating all cable glanding in Zone 1 and creating a register in SafeEx for the client.

The project involved several challenges, including:

  • Working within the constraints of the flight schedule to ensure the refuelling facility was operational at least one hour before arrivals and departures
  • Remediating any faults identified during the inspection related to glands and electrical safety equipment

Staggered solution

The team mitigated these challenges through good communication with the airport manager and undertaking the remedial work in short segments to allow the facility to be operational at short notice.

No flights on Saturdays and Sunday enabled full isolation and a major amount of the work to be completed, including:

  • Opening cable trays and unclipping cables to achieve the desired length
  • Installing junction boxes and rewiring sections

Outcome

ESI Tech Group’s team inspected every gland and re-tightened or replaced them in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, including internal gland cones for all steel wire armoured (SWA) & steel wire braided (SWB) cables.

Where necessary, our team fitted new Ex d glands.

We conducted detailed inspections of all the assets within the hazardous area zone.

The refuelling facility had all remedial observations rectified and is fully compliant.
