Project background
Our client engaged ESI Tech Group to provide hydro demolition, diamond wire cutting, steel fabrication and electrical works for an iron ore mine in the Pilbara, Western Australia.
Solution
ESI Tech Group’s team designed and supplied customised equipment, and executed the site works, including cutting and removing eight blocks of reinforced concrete with a total weight of circa 75 tonnes.
We delivered the works using our integrated service model, which involved several trades, including concrete demolition, electrical cable relocation, oil & water header pipe removal and replacement for the large-scale mine.
Concrete cutting & hydro demolition
The concrete blasting works included:
- Creating improved maintenance access to the crusher discharge conveyor by cutting and removing large-scale concrete sections from the existing structure
- Fabricating, painting and Installing mesh guarding at each cut-out
- Fabricating and replacing mesh guarding at 10 additional locations between the openings
- Managing the relocation of waste oil and water piping
- Designing and supplying a block extraction system
- Managing the safe removal and disposal of the 75 tonnes of reinforced concrete
Our team cut the concrete from nine places and removed it using a client-supplied crane, some of which had to be conducted while the conveyor was in use.
Pipe relocations
The pipework conducted by our subcontractor included:
- Supplying and installing all materials and tooling
- Isolating pumps and piping
- Performing a hydrostatic pressure test
Electrical works
The electrical work included:
- Mobilising crews
- Mobilising equipment
- Designing and supplying customised panels to accommodate service relocation
- Updating existing documentation to reflect changes, including compiling cable schedule & load calculations, and termination drawings to be as-built on site
- Investigating instrument, control & power circuits and upgrading cabling where required
- Commissioning and trouble-shooting
- Managing freight and logistics within a tight timeframe
Customised, flexible solution
As the project was large, complex, and had fluctuating conditions and a tight timeframe, our team had to think on the job and modify the scope and equipment to suit.
These works helped improve access for personnel to remove spillage and, therefore, reduce downtime.
